Commission comment on naming of McCreesh Park

The Equality Commission, in its investigation report in April 2014, held that there had been a breach of the Council’s equality scheme and made a recommendation to Newry and Mourne District Council that it review its decision to name the park after Raymond McCreesh, in a transparent manner that takes proper account of the legal obligations to have due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity and regard to the desirability of promoting good relations.

The Commission received a report on the Council’s progress in relation to that recommendation in October 2014 indicating that the review was under way. On completion of the review, it is required to be reported to the Equality Commission under the terms of the recommendation and the Commission will give full consideration to that report when it has been received.
