Services to the public
In Northern Ireland, those who provide services to the public have a legal duty not to discriminate on grounds of:
- Disability
- Race, including being a member of the Irish Traveller community
- Gender
- Sexual orientation
- Religious belief or political opinion
Public bodies
Public bodies also have duties under Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998. When carrying out their work, they must have due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity and good relations on a number of grounds. They must equality impact assess their policies and consult with those affected by their policies, including services users. They are also subject to duties under the Disability Discrimination Act to promote positive attitudes towards disabled people and to encourage the participation of disabled people in public life.
