African and Caribbean Living Heritage Programme

HUMAN LIBRARY

During "Racial Equality Month" 2010, the Afro-Community Support Organisation ("ACSONI"), in partnership with the Equality Commission Northern Ireland will be hosting an African and Caribbean Living Heritage Programme. This project will seek to contribute to the promotion of community cohesion and integration by creating a platform for intercultural dialogue and myth-busting conversations between people of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. These ´intercultural exchanges´ will enable people to explore issues of living with cultural difference and encourage mutual understanding in a safe, supported, neutral and relatively structured environment.

The conversationalists are made up of "Books" which are people from an African or Caribbean background and "Borrowers"; someone who is interested in learning about a certain culture or discussing certain issues affecting people from that geographical location or ethnic background.

Borrowers of "Afro-books" will reserve a 30 minute time slot on the day of the event to borrow their ´book´. They will need to be at the venue at the allocated time and date to take out their "book". Some of our "books" are from Jamaica, America, Sudan, Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Uganda, Somalia, South Africa, Cameroon, Libya, Congo, Ghana, Egypt, Somalia, Ivory Coast, etc. They are people that are representative of minority communities frequently confronted with stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination (and are sometimes victims of exclusion and marginalisation)

Free tea, coffee and refreshments will be served for participants to enjoy while conversing with their ´book´

This first session is targeted at staff of public authorities, voluntary and community organisations.

Date: Thursday 25th November 2010
Venue: Equality House Training room, 7-9 Shaftesbury Square, Belfast, BT2 7DP
Time: 10:00am - 1:00pm

For further information on our books and the African and Caribbean Living Heritage Programme, please contact: Alfred Abolarin, ACSONI Manager on 02890 434 090 or email programme_manager@acsoni.org

To book a slot to borrow one of our ´books´ on the 25th contact Alfred or Catherine on 028 90 434090 or email info@acsoni.org
