Best practice

The Commission recommends that employers comply with the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act Code of Practice - Employment and Occupation. The Code of Practice gives practical guidance on how to prevent disability discrimination against disabled people in employment or when seeking employment.

The Code does not impose legal obligations, nor is it an authoritative statement of law - this is a matter for the courts and industrial tribunals. However the Code can be used in evidence in legal proceedings under the Act. Courts and tribunals must take into account any part of the Code that appears to them relevant to any question arising in those proceedings.

To assist employers to meet the requirements of current equality legislation and to promote best practice across the equality categories, the Commission developed its Employment Equality Plans Model.
