Sexual orientation in education

The Commission was one of the partners with The Rainbow Project on their research project ‘Through Our Eyes’. Its findings closely mirror those of our own most recent equality awareness survey, published June 2012.

If anyone has been discriminated against at school or college, the Commission can offer support including legal assistance and expert advice by telephone to 028 90 500 600 or by email on information@equalityni.org - all enquiries are treated as confidential.

Equality Awareness Survey:

There are lots of useful publications on the Rainbow Project's website

We have also produced a short guide for education providers - Eliminating Sexual Orientation Discrimination in NI (pdf, 2009)

Our research team will be taking the opportunity, when updating the ‘Key Inequalities’ document, to re-examine the situation for LGB young people in education.
