Fawcett Society: sex discrimination law review

Fawcett Society: sex discrimination law review
18/05/2017
The Fawcett Society has launched a sex discrimination law review which will include a consideration of the sex equality legislation in NI.

The Equality Commission is encouraging organisations and individuals with an interest in equality between the sexes to respond to a review by the Fawcett Society of sex discrimination law. This will include a consideration of the sex equality legislation in Northern Ireland and the differences between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

Chief Executive Dr Evelyn Collins says: “The Fawcett Society review has been established in response to the concern that rights may be eroded or weakened as a result of Brexit. This is an important review and we would encourage those with an interest in stronger legal protection against sex discrimination in Northern Ireland to submit evidence.  This is particularly important as men and women have less protection against sex discrimination here than in other parts of the UK.

“The Equality Commission has consistently called for action to address the significant gaps and weaknesses in our sex equality laws. We have also more recently called for no regression from existing equality laws after the UK leaves the EU.”

Submissions should be sent to the Fawcett Society at lawreview@fawcettsociety.org.uk before 3 July 2017.
