Statement on anti-Islamic and anti-immigration protests
Geraldine McGahey, Chief Commissioner, Equality Commission for Northern Ireland said:
“The social media calls for people to attend anti-Islamic and anti-immigration protests this weekend are very concerning.
The horrific events that happened in Southport earlier this week must not be allowed to be hijacked to promote hatred, fear, racism and prejudice on our streets.
People have come from across the world to work and live amongst us as part of our community. None of us can comprehend the trauma, stress, and fear that those who seek sanctuary here have endured.
It is difficult to imagine a more positive statement about Northern Ireland than people coming here to make it their home and contribute positively to our society.
We all have a role to play in eliminating racism and prejudice in Northern Ireland. As valued members of our community, it’s important that people from all races and ethnic backgrounds are treated with dignity and respect.”
