Statement on Ballymena race related violence June 2025

Statement on Ballymena race related violence June 2025
10/06/2025
Chief Commissioner Geraldine McGahey statement on race related violence in Ballymena.
Geraldine McGahey, Chief Commissioner, Equality Commission for Northern Ireland said:

“The violence on the streets of Ballymena last night is deeply troubling and must be condemned. What may have begun as a protest in response to a specific incident, has now escalated into race-related unrest, and that is entirely unacceptable.

There is absolutely no justification for criminal behaviour, and there is no place for racism in our society.

Tackling racism requires a coordinated response across Northern Ireland, with clear civic and political leadership . Let us work together to ensure our streets and communities reflect the values of dignity, respect, and equality. "
