Section 75 leadership guidance for public authorities

The Equality Commission has produced guidance to help public sector decision makers ensure they are meeting the requirements of their equality and good relations duties under Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act.

David Sterling
Section 75 - Demonstrating Effective Leadership” has been endorsed by the Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, David Sterling, who says “It is the duty of all of us in leadership positions to make clear our ownership of the statutory equality and good relations duties in our organisations; they are a vital part of our legal framework in Northern Ireland under the Northern Ireland Act”.

The equality and good relations duties apply to all designated public authorities including government departments and agencies, local councils, health trusts, housing associations, colleges and universities, and education and library bodies.

The guidance sets out clear action points, which leaders, senior managers, decision makers and all those implementing the duties can refer to.

It is vital that that equality of opportunity and good relations are central to policy making and service throughout government and all public authorities.  The statutory duties must be complied with and if they are used appropriately they will bring real benefits to people’s lives.
