Make Equality A Priority

Geraldine McGaheyNorthern Ireland’s equality legislation needs updated urgently, to ensure we all have better protection against discrimination than we do now.

We have a patchwork of legislation that’s showing some gaps, and people in Northern Ireland are unable to challenge some types of discrimination because the laws are not there to protect them.

We have longstanding recommendations for law reform in a number of areas but, really, rather than try and mend a patchwork, we would be better to work towards a Single Equality Act, which would move all our discrimination laws forward at once.

I urge our politicians to make equality a priority and work together for a Single Equality Act which would update the law against discrimination on all the equality grounds, improving life for everyone in Northern Ireland. I’m asking you, our elected politicians, to make equality a priority and work together for a Single Equality Act which would update the law against discrimination on all the equality grounds, improving life for everyone who lives and works in Northern Ireland.
