Equality Commission Intervention in the Legacy Cases

Equality Commission Intervention in the Legacy Cases
23/11/2023
Equality Commission statement.

Speaking today, Geraldine McGahey, Chief Commissioner, Equality Commission for Northern Ireland said: “As confirmed earlier this week, the Commission has intervened in these cases in relation to our responsibility under Article 2 (1) of the Windsor Framework to ensure that the Government upholds its commitment to the protection of certain equality and human rights after Brexit.

“Our intervention is based on our concerns that certain provisions of the Legacy Act breach Article 2 of the Windsor Framework.

“Our counsel has outlined the Commission’s arguments this afternoon and told the court that we believe the UK Government did not effectively take equality and human rights protected under Article 2 of the Windsor Framework into account either before or after Brexit in the process of conceiving and enacting the Legacy Act,” concluded Ms McGahey."
